Maryland: Use SDAT Real Property Data Search

In Maryland, property valuation records are maintained by the state Department of Assessments and Taxation, not the county tax-payment portal.

Exemptions, Credits and Valuation Relief in Caroline County

Relief depends on the state, occupancy, ownership, age, disability, income and other statutory requirements. A homeowner in Maryland cannot use Virginia’s relief application, or vice versa.

Maryland Homestead Tax Credit

Maryland’s Homestead Tax Credit limits qualifying increases in taxable assessment for eligible principal residences. Caroline County confirmed a local 105% homestead assessment cap in its FY2027 resolution.

This does not mean the tax bill can never increase more than 5%, because tax rates and other charges can change.

Maryland Homestead Credit

Maryland Homeowners’ Property Tax Credit

This separate state program can reduce qualifying property taxes for eligible homeowners based on income and other criteria. It is not the same as the Homestead Tax Credit.

Apply through the Maryland SDAT program using the current application and deadline.

Maryland Homeowners’ Tax Credit

OVERDUE BILLS

What Happens if Caroline County Property Taxes Are Late?

Caroline County, Maryland

Caroline County explains that annual taxes or first semiannual installments become delinquent after September 30, and second installments after December 31.

The county’s FAQ describes interest at 1% per month and a 3% penalty on county and municipal tax items under its stated schedule. Additional sale-related charges can apply once the collection process progresses.

Its published tax-sale timeline describes delinquent notices, spring publication and an annual May tax-lien auction. A tax-lien sale is not necessarily an immediate transfer of the deed; statutory redemption and foreclosure procedures govern what happens next.

Virginia’s county Treasurer lists June 5 and December 5 deadlines and warns of penalties and interest for late payment. For an actual account, request a dated payoff from the Treasurer because the total can change over time.

If your property is at risk of enforcement: Do not rely on the calculator or an old printed bill. Contact the applicable Caroline County collection office, identify the property or tax ticket, and ask for the total needed to resolve the account and any outstanding legal charges.
