Property QuickSearch, real estate property information and GIS map.
Step-by-step property assessment lookup
-
Open the City’s Property Information page.
Use the official link above. This page provides several choices, including Property QuickSearch, Real Estate Property Information Search and GIS Map Portal.
-
Choose Property QuickSearch for a basic result.
This search provides details such as parcel number and total assessment value. Use it when you need the assessed value quickly.
-
Search by address or map parcel number.
Enter the property’s address or parcel identifier. The GIS QuickSearch documentation says its default search supports both.
-
Open the matching property.
If using the interactive GIS map, the City’s help instructions explain that searching may only zoom to the location. Click the actual property on the map to open its details.
-
Confirm the correct parcel.
Compare the parcel number, physical address, land record, ownership information where available and total assessment.
-
Use the Real Estate Property Information Search for more detail.
Return to the directory and open the more detailed real estate search when you need additional property characteristics or assessment information.
-
Save the parcel number and assessment year.

See the City’s QuickSearch help instructions if you have trouble navigating the map.
03 / TAX PAYMENT HISTORY
How to Check Whether Chesapeake Real Estate Property Taxes Were Paid
Chesapeake publishes a free public paid-tax lookup for real estate property taxes. This is useful if you need to check the previous tax year’s payment record or verify taxes reported at a property closing.
The public lookup currently identifies tax year 2025.
How to use Chesapeake’s paid-tax lookup
-
Open the free Paid Tax Parcel / Address Lookup.
The page indicates the tax year supported by its current dataset. At this review, it displays 2025.
-
Enter the parcel, partial address or owner’s name.
The City instructs users to enter at least two characters. Owner names are normally displayed last name first.
-
Avoid punctuation and wildcards.
The system does not support wildcard searches and warns against punctuation.
-
Make the search more specific if necessary.
The dropdown may show only 1,000 results. Use a parcel/control number or more specific address to reduce broad matches.
-
Choose the matching parcel and submit.
Review the payment information returned for the indicated tax year.
-
Request confirmation when necessary.
If you need an up-to-the-minute balance, certified evidence or a year not shown in the public tool, contact the Treasurer.

04 / PAY PROPERTY TAX
How to Pay Chesapeake Real Estate Taxes Online
Chesapeake’s Treasurer offers e-check and credit-card payment routes. The e-check option is free for ordinary qualifying payments. Credit-card property tax payments are subject to the City’s listed convenience fee.
Real estate, personal property, stormwater fees and other eligible City accounts.
Payment micro-steps
-
Open the official Treasurer portal entry page.
Read its notices, particularly the 2026 payment-system change announcement.
-
Choose Pay By e-Check or Pay By Credit Card.
Both provide real estate tax options, but the bill-number format and convenience charges can differ.
-
Read the appropriate bill-number instructions.
The City specifically warns that real estate tax bill numbers used for e-check and card payments are not the same. Follow the examples provided for your selected method.
-
Enter the requested tax account information.
Verify the property, real estate tax bill, tax year, quarter and due date.
-
Review the displayed balance and fees.
Do not assume a free e-check screen includes penalties, late fees or collection charges. The City warns that those additional charges may not appear in the e-check system.
-
Submit the payment once.
Keep the payment confirmation and verify the date, especially if setting a scheduled payment.
-
Confirm the payment with the Treasurer if needed.
For accounts subject to collection action, the City’s instructions direct taxpayers to contact the Treasurer after an Official Payments transaction and supply the confirmation number.
Online and in-person card processing fees
For example, a $2,000 property tax card payment would incur a $48 convenience fee at a 2.4% online rate, before any other applicable charges.
Important 2026 payment-system changes
The City says it is updating its tax system and payment portal during fall 2026. Beginning September 1, 2026, scheduled e-check payments and payment-plan functions are restricted to scheduling no more than 30 days ahead while the transition takes place.
05 / DUE DATES
Chesapeake Real Estate Property Tax Due Dates: Four Quarterly Installments
Unlike Virginia jurisdictions that collect real estate taxes twice a year, Chesapeake bills residential real estate in four quarterly installments.
| Fiscal 2026–2027 quarter | Scheduled due date | Tax coverage |
|---|---|---|
| First quarter | September 30, 2026 | July–September 2026 |
| Second quarter | December 31, 2026 | October–December 2026 |
| Third quarter | March 31, 2027 | January–March 2027 |
| Fourth quarter | June 5, 2027* | April–June 2027 |
*June 5, 2027 falls on a Saturday. Chesapeake states that due dates falling on a weekend or holiday move to the next business day. Confirm the actual adjusted 2027 deadline on your City bill before scheduling payment.
The City requires payment to be received or properly postmarked by the relevant deadline; otherwise statutory penalty and interest may apply.

How the City calculates real estate taxes
Worked example: For a $350,000 assessment, dividing by 100 produces 3,500 taxable units. Multiplying 3,500 by $1.01 gives a basic annual tax of $3,535. Dividing this into four equal quarters gives approximately $883.75 each.
07 / SENIOR & DISABILITY TAX RELIEF
Chesapeake Real Estate Tax Relief for Seniors and Disabled Homeowners
Chesapeake has an annual property tax relief program for qualifying homeowners who are at least 65 years old or totally and permanently disabled.
The program may exempt all or part of qualifying real estate taxes based on household income. It is administered by the Commissioner of the Revenue.
The net-worth calculation generally excludes the qualifying residence and up to three acres of land. Certain income exclusions can also apply under the City’s rules.
How much property tax relief can qualifying homeowners receive?
| Combined household income | Portion of qualifying tax relieved |
|---|---|
| $0–$25,000 | 100% |
| $25,001–$36,000 | 75% |
| $36,001–$53,000 | 50% |
| $53,001–$70,000 | 25% |
| More than $70,000 | Generally outside the stated household income eligibility limit. |
These brackets are the City’s published relief schedule. Eligibility also depends on age or qualifying permanent disability, home ownership, principal residence and net worth.
How to apply for Chesapeake tax relief
- Check your eligibility.
Review age or disability requirements, annual household income and net worth.
- Open the Real Estate Tax Relief page.
Use the official City resource below.
- Contact the Commissioner’s office to make an appointment.

The City indicates that approved relief applies to the quarterly bills beginning September 30 for the applicable fiscal year.
Eligibility, income brackets, annual renewal and appointment instructions.
08 / VETERANS & SURVIVING SPOUSES
Chesapeake Disabled Veteran Real Estate Tax Exemption
Qualifying disabled veterans and certain surviving spouses may receive an exemption from local real estate taxes on a principal residence they own and occupy.
The City’s qualifying veteran requirements generally include a U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs certification for total and permanent service-connected disability with an overall 100% rating, or qualifying 100% compensation based on individual unemployability.
Official application steps
- Open Disabled Veterans Tax Benefits.
Find the Real Estate Tax Exemption section.

Confirm VA certification, ownership and principal-residence requirements.
- Choose the relevant application.
The City provides separate forms for veterans, qualifying surviving spouses and preliminary exemption requests.
- Prepare proof and complete the form.
Follow the instructions for VA documentation and real estate ownership.
- File with the Commissioner of the Revenue.
Keep approval documentation and review subsequent bills or applicable refunds.
09 / ASSESSMENT APPEALS
How to Challenge Your Chesapeake Home’s Assessed Value
If your property assessment is higher than you believe the home is worth, Chesapeake provides several routes for review. The City’s Real Estate Assessor, Board of Equalization and Circuit Court have separate roles.
Available assessment appeal routes
Request a review if property characteristics or estimated market value may be inaccurate.
File a timely formal application with evidence addressing fair market value or unequal assessment.
Judicial review may be available under applicable Virginia law and procedural deadlines.
Step-by-step assessment appeal
- Find your official assessed value.
Use the Property Information website and save the parcel number and assessment notice.
- Check the property description.
Review square footage, improvements, land characteristics, construction and other assessment details.
- Contact the Real Estate Assessor.
Email assessor@cityofchesapeake.net or call 757-382-6235 to request a review or report an error.
- Collect relevant valuation evidence.
Examples include comparable sales, independent appraisal evidence, factual property errors or qualifying unequal treatment.
- Review the Board of Equalization filing requirements.
Open the Assessor’s official Appeals Information section and obtain the appeal form, instructions and sample packet.
- Check the specific fiscal-year deadline.
For FY 2026–2027, the published application deadline was April 1, 2026, which has passed. Future fiscal years will have separate filing schedules.
- Submit the application if timely.
Follow the evidence and mailing rules in the applicable year’s instructions. Retain proof of submission.
10 / ADDITIONAL HOMEOWNER COSTS
Stormwater Fees, New Construction and Supplemental Real Estate Tax Bills
Chesapeake stormwater fees
The City lists an annual stormwater fee of $136.20 for a single residence, with two installments of $68.10. Its real estate tax information page states that those installments are due June 5 and December 31.
Stormwater fees are separate from the basic $1.01 per $100 real estate tax calculation. Do not automatically apply the real estate tax percentage to a stormwater fee.
Supplemental taxes for new construction or demolition
Chesapeake may issue supplemental real estate tax bills for new construction, property additions or demolitions. The City records qualifying valuation changes quarterly, with effective dates on October 1, January 1, April 1 and July 1.
If you recently built an addition, completed a new house or demolished a structure, check whether the current year’s normal tax estimate excludes a supplemental change.
11 / MORTGAGE ESCROW
Does Your Mortgage Company Pay Chesapeake Property Taxes?
A mortgage payment may include money collected into an escrow account to pay quarterly real estate taxes. Before paying a bill yourself, verify whether your mortgage servicer has already arranged the payment.
Ask the mortgage servicer
- Which Chesapeake parcel is covered?
- Are all four quarters escrowed?
- When is the next payment scheduled?
- Are new construction supplemental bills included?
- Does the escrow analysis reflect the current assessment?
Ask the City Treasurer
- Has the current quarter posted as paid?
- Are any other quarters outstanding?
- Was a payment applied to the wrong bill?
- Is a supplemental account involved?
- What confirmation is available?
