Kershaw County Property Tax: Pay Your Bill, Search Property Records & Calculate Taxes
Need to pay a Kershaw County property tax bill, find a receipt, or estimate taxes on a home in Camden, Lugoff, Elgin, or elsewhere in the county?
Kershaw County provides an official online tax search and payment system, a separate GIS property lookup, and a county-operated property tax estimator. You can complete most routine searches without visiting the courthouse.
Kershaw County Property Tax: Quick Answers
Your actual tax bill depends on the property’s value, its classification, the applicable tax district, yearly millage, school operating tax relief, local option sales tax credits, and any additional fees.
Use the Treasurer for tax payments and delinquent balances; the Assessor for real estate valuation, 4% legal residence status, and assessment appeals; and the Auditor for tax calculations, personal property, vehicle matters, and homestead exemptions.
How to Pay Kershaw County Property Tax Online
Kershaw County uses QPayBill as its online tax search and payment system. The county’s Treasurer page and public tax notices direct taxpayers to this service.

-
Select the tax year.

Compare the property description, map or parcel number, receipt number, district, tax year, and owner information. Do not rely on a matching surname alone.
-
Review the amount due.

-
Proceed to checkout.
Select the available online payment controls, review accepted payment methods and processor charges, then submit the payment.
-
Save your receipt.
Keep the transaction confirmation and tax receipt number. Return to the payment center later to confirm the account is marked paid.
The county’s payment portal states that credit-card transactions have a maximum of $99,999. It also warns that some older delinquent bills may not be payable online. If the portal rejects a delinquent account, contact the Treasurer rather than repeatedly attempting payment.
Can you pay by check or money order?
Yes. The county’s online tax portal states that checks and money orders sent through the accepted county process do not incur an online convenience fee. The county also honors qualifying postmark dates.
Mail payments according to the current bill instructions to the Kershaw County Treasurer, 515 Walnut Street, Room 140, Camden, SC 29020. Include the payment stub or identifying receipt number.

Can Kershaw County real estate taxes be split into payments?
The Treasurer advertises EquaPay as a way to divide real estate taxes into more manageable payments. It is not safe to assume that every delinquent account or tax year qualifies.
Open the official Treasurer page, find the EquaPay section, select its enrollment link, and review eligibility, schedules, and fees before signing up.

When Are Kershaw County Property Taxes Due?
South Carolina’s regular annual real property tax collection calendar generally allows payment without delinquency penalty through January 15 following the tax year, subject to statutory mailing and deadline rules.
South Carolina Code § 12-45-180 addresses the delinquency penalties. The first penalty date can also be affected when the tax notice is mailed later than usual.
Once a bill enters delinquent collection, other costs and tax-sale procedures may apply. Do not estimate the payoff by adding a percentage to the original bill without checking the county’s current statement.

Kershaw County Property Tax Rates: 4%, 6% and Millage
Kershaw County uses South Carolina assessment ratios to determine how much of a property’s taxable market value becomes assessed value. The county then applies the applicable district millage and credits to calculate a bill.
| Property classification | Assessment ratio | Practical meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Qualifying primary legal residence | 4% | Owner-occupied home approved for legal-residence classification. |
| Other real estate | 6% | Generally includes non-qualifying residential property, second homes and many commercial real estate parcels. |
| Privately owned agricultural real property | 4% of qualifying use value | Special valuation and eligibility requirements; not automatically 4% of open-market value. |
| Corporately owned agricultural real property | 6% of qualifying use value | Agricultural qualification rules apply. |
These are assessment ratios, not the annual tax percentages. A qualifying 4% legal residence does not simply pay 4% of its market value in tax.
The South Carolina Department of Revenue provides the current statutory property assessment ratio overview on its Local Government Services page.
What is a millage rate?
One mill equals $1 of tax per $1,000 of assessed value. For example, if assessed value is $12,000 and the applicable millage is 300 mills, the preliminary amount is:
Why Camden, Lugoff and Elgin properties can have different tax bills
The tax district matters. Municipal tax levies, school districts, fire service areas, special-purpose districts, and other lawful charges can differ depending on location.
That means the same market value and assessment ratio will not always produce the same property tax amount throughout Kershaw County.
Kershaw County Property Tax Calculator
Kershaw County has its own tax estimator that accepts market value, property type, legal residence status, homestead status and tax district. That is the preferred starting point for a location-specific estimate.
Kershaw County Property Tax Estimator
Includes tax district and property-classification inputs. County notes state that agricultural estimates are not supported and fees are not included.
How to use the official estimator
-
Open the county estimator.
Use the direct county-authorized link above.
-
Enter Market Value of Property.
Use the property’s assessed market value from the Assessor when available.
-
Select Property Type.
Choose the classification that accurately represents the property.
-
Answer Legal Residence?
Select Yes only if the property qualifies under applicable South Carolina rules. If approval is pending, ask the Assessor which classification to use.
-
Answer Homestead?
Only select the exemption if you are eligible and it applies to your assessment.
-
Select Tax District.
Use the district shown on your property tax notice or confirmed with the Auditor.
-
Calculate and review.
Remember that the official estimator explicitly says estimates do not include fees and that agricultural estimates are unavailable.
Quick property tax calculator
The calculator below demonstrates the basic market-value × assessment-ratio × millage relationship. Unlike the county estimator, it does not automatically determine the current tax district, school credit, local option sales tax credit, or fees.
The default 300-mill figure is a mathematical example, not Kershaw County’s verified current millage for your property. School operating exemptions and local sales-tax credits may require calculations based on assessed or market value rather than a simple dollar credit. Use the county’s estimator for a better district-specific approximation and the Treasurer’s live system for an actual amount owed.
Actual example published by Kershaw County
The Kershaw County Auditor publishes a calculation for a $131,000 qualifying legal residence within Camden city limits.
In the county’s published example, preliminary taxes of $1,788.41 are reduced by county and Camden local option sales tax credits and a school tax credit, then solid waste and fire fees are added. The result is $572.05.

Use the official forms link above and choose the online or printable Legal Residence Application.
-
Complete the ownership and residency details.

The county’s legal residence instructions refer to evidence such as the most recent South Carolina income tax return, vehicle registration, and other documents the Assessor needs to verify domicile.
-
Submit through the county’s authorized method.
Use the current online form or the office instructions for a paper application.
-
Confirm the classification on your assessment.
After review, check whether the 4% legal residence classification appears on the property record and next eligible bill.

Kershaw County Vehicle Property Tax Is Different from Real Estate Tax
Kershaw County’s online tax system also handles vehicle, personal property, and watercraft accounts. They can involve different valuation rules, payment deadlines, and state registration requirements.
How to pay vehicle taxes
- Open the official QPayBill tax search.
- Select Vehicle rather than Real Estate.
- Choose the tax year and search for the appropriate bill.
- Check the account, vehicle information, fees, and amount due.
- Complete payment and save the receipt.
The county states that after a timely vehicle tax payment online, the South Carolina DMV generally mails the decal within 7–10 business days. If you need a decal immediately, the county recommends making payment in person at the Treasurer’s Office, or using the online receipt at the DMV according to its instructions.

What happens if you recently bought property?
A change of ownership may not immediately appear in every county database. Confirm the deed is recorded and the mailing information is correct. Review closing documents to determine any private prorated tax arrangement between the buyer and seller.
Kershaw County tax notices state that the county does not prorate or divide real property taxes between buyers and sellers. Private settlement adjustments do not automatically divide the county’s tax account.
What if the mortgage lender pays the taxes?
If your mortgage uses an escrow account, the lender may pay the annual real estate tax bill. Before making a separate payment, check your lender’s payment history and confirm the county’s actual posting status.
